The historical concept of art

It is not possible to define art without addressing the broader problem of cultural imperialism. In a capitalist society, elites are at the top of the pyramid, while the masses live below them. The elites are able to influence policy makers through their inside act. However, right-side ideas are difficult to quantify, while the “head” talks theories but fails to make a significant contribution to policy-making. In contrast, art has the unique ability to inspire people to ask new questions, stimulate their curiosity, and challenge conventional concepts of art.

The historical concept of art is a defining concept, which has different facets. The appreciative concept of art is a defining characteristic of the object itself, and must have a positive aesthetic effect. This is not an arbitrary relationship, but a generative one. The implication is that a single concept of art is both necessary and sufficient to be an art form. This is a core-dependent homonymy, which means that the disjuncts of a definition are insufficient to make it an art.

There are several overlapping aspects to the classical definition of art. While the first two of these two terms share the same general nature, they do not necessarily have the same meaning. The classical definitions of art are not freestanding or self-contained. They must be understood in their context, standing in close relation to other overlapping aspects. The second condition is particularly useful, since it prevents the classical definition from collapsing into the traditional one.

A central feature of an art form is novelty. A new concept might be deemed a novelty. Hence, a piece of art may not be a cocktail party if it had been a battle or war. It is a novelty, and thus a disjunct. Therefore, the disjunctual property of art is also a defining characteristic of its object. This condition prevents the classical definition from collapsing into it.

An expert’s knowledge of art is necessary to distinguish it from non-experts. Its definition must be ambiguous, which means that it may not be a genuine work of art. Nonetheless, it must contain some element of truth. Moreover, a fictitious artwork will not be considered a work of art. It is a form of culture. This is a fundamental feature of a modern art. Then, it is a type of social form.

The classical definitions of art are difficult to understand. The term “art” refers to the creation of something that has meaning for the observer. Consequently, it is often considered the most elusive and challenging concept to define. A good definition is “art” if it is a combination of two other concepts. And a good example of art is a work of art. The best definition of an art is one that evokes feelings and thoughts.
